What is the difference between direct thermal and thermal transfer labels?
Direct thermal labels have a heat-sensitive coating, so the printer creates the image with heat alone and needs no ribbon. They suit shipping labels and anything with a short life. Thermal transfer labels need a wax or resin ribbon and produce a print that resists heat, light and abrasion. Choose thermal transfer for pallet, asset and long-term storage labels.
What size thermal label do Australian couriers use?
The standard shipping label size for Australia Post, StarTrack and most major courier and eParcel platforms is 100 x 150mm, also sold as 102 x 150mm (4 x 6 inch). Both sizes print correctly from courier software on standard desktop label printers. Smaller sizes such as 102 x 50mm suit barcodes, product labels and internal stock labelling rather than consignment labels.
Why are my thermal labels fading?
Direct thermal labels darken or fade with heat, direct sunlight and friction. That makes Australian summers, hot vans and tin-roofed warehouses a common cause. The print is designed to last the life of a delivery, not years. For labels that need to stay readable in storage or outdoors, switch to thermal transfer labels with a ribbon. Store unused rolls somewhere cool, dry and out of the sun.
How do I know if a label roll will fit my printer?
Check three measurements: label width, core size and maximum roll diameter. Desktop printers generally take 25mm cores (sometimes 40mm) with smaller rolls. Industrial printers usually run 76mm cores with large 1,000-label rolls. Make sure the label width does not exceed your printer's maximum print width. Use the label finder at the top of this page to match all three.
Why is my printer feeding labels but printing nothing?
The usual cause is the roll being loaded with the printable side facing away from the print head. The other common cause is thermal transfer labels running without a ribbon. To test a label, scratch it with a fingernail: a direct thermal label shows a dark mark, and a thermal transfer label does not. If the label turns out to be thermal transfer, fit a ribbon or switch the printer to direct thermal labels.
Which thermal label is best for high-volume despatch?
For warehouses shipping every day, the Omni 102 x 150mm Direct Thermal Labels, 1,000 per roll on a 75mm core are the most popular choice. They are the standard courier label size, need no ribbon, and the large roll means fewer changeovers at the packing bench. Smaller 500-label rolls on a 25mm core are available for desktop printers.
